HUGE NEWS about VOL: with your patron barcode you have access to the Vermont Online Library, and as part of the Gale PowerSearch upgrade, many of the Gale databases in Vermont Online Library now offer free audio of articles as a downloadable MP3 file. Audio is offered as an option along with emailing or downloading the text file. These options appear in a small box on the right side of the individual article. (Please note that if an article is represented in the database by a citation only, not full text, the audio version will be only the citation, not the complete article.) In addition to the audio in the PowerSearch databases, Gale can translate the text version (not audio) into several languages. ~NOT A PATRON OF KELLOGG-HUBBARD LIBRARY? ~TECH TIDBITS Warning! Rogue Security Software Is Big Threat       Trojans, including rogue security software, remain the most prevalent category of threats according to a recent report from Microsoft. So stay alert - rogue security software appears to be beneficial from a security perspective but actually provides limited or no security, generates erroneous or misleading alerts, and/or attempts to lure users into participating in fraudulent transactions.       Watch out for pop-up "alerts" or "updates" that may appear on your screen that say something like, "Warning! Malware detected on your computer!" (See the example below.) These messages often look very official, and you may be tempted to click on the button that offers to remove the threats by downloading security software. DON'T DO IT.       These messages are crafted to scare you (hence the nickname of scareware) into spending money for worthless antivirus protection. Even worse, scareware is often malware designed to steal personal information, and installing it on your computer can lead to unauthorized financial transactions and identity theft. The image below is an example of a scareware pop-up. http://www.cornerstonenow.com/newsletter/section-a/2010/10-04_scareware.jpg To avoid having to deal with scareware, Internet security experts advise caution:
FAKE FAFSA site When applying for student loans, be careful not to end up on FAFSA.com instead of FAFSA.ed.gov, the official government student loan site. The fake site charges students at least $79 to file the forms. FAFSA.com, the fake site, still goes by FAFSA. But instead of it standing for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid", it stands for "File your Application for Federal Student Aid". Way down below the fold it says "Please note that this site is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Education or the FAFSA on the Web site. FAFSA.com (Student Financial Aid Services, Inc.) completes, submits and tracks FAFSA applications." LINKS OF INTEREST: PDF ebooks at Kellogg-Hubbard! Internet websites and classified ads are no longer the surest route to employment. The Library's latest edition of the Job Hunter's Sourcebook is designed to help you in your job search. Here's how it works: Under each type of employment (auto mechanic, caterer, computer programmer, etc.), you will find references to sources of help-wanted ads specific to your career, employer directories and networking lists, job referral services, online job sources and services, trade shows, journals, professional associations and more. While the book must be used in the library, you are welcome to make photocopies of needed pages. The library staff will be happy to help you use the references you find to further your search and land the job you want.
